Deal is struck: Matthew: 26:14-16
Jesus foresees the betrayal: Matthew 26:20
Betrayal: Matthew 26:46-56
Jusdas was one of Jesus’ close friends, one of the 12 chosen disciples. He betrayed Him with a kiss… A sign of intamacy and love. This must have been a very bitter and painful part of His death.
Can you imagine your good friend betraying you to die, and doing so in such a seemingly intimate way? It is the worst case of betrayal I can think of. It helps provide perspective to the pain & bitterness I experience when friends & family let me down or betray me.
Poeple may let me down, but Jesus never will. He loves us so much that he knowingly allowed Judas to betray Him. Jesus allowed this so that He could die on the cross for our sins, but also as part of experiencing life allong with us. He knows these feelings and was still able to love us.
Baptism: Matthew 3:16-17
Passage read in the temple by Jesus about Himself: Isaiah 61:1-2 (Luke 4)
Anointed with perfume: Matthew 26:6-13
To be anointed meant to be chosen and sent for a possition of leadership (eg David’s anointing 1Samuel 16:13).
Therefore we see hear Jesus’ anointing at the beginning of His ministry (at His baptism), and towards the end of His earthly ministry, just before Its climax with His crusifiction & resurection. It is part of His Kingdom being established.
Jesus is The King, God’s chosen one to lead His peaple back to Him.
In November I said I’d like to make an ‘advent calendar’ for Easter as an extention of our pictoral (& Scriptural) advent calendar. I may have under-estimated this task, & am therefore presenting a 10 day countdown, with the hope of extending it to 40 days next year.
Here is the propsed outline:

Jesus the annointed one – Matt 3:16-17 & Isaiah 61:1-2 (Luke 4) & Matt 26:6-13
Day 2 (Saturday) bag of coins
Jesus betrayed for a bag of coins – Matt 26:14-16 & 46-56
Day 3 (Sunday) Rooster
Jesus denied – Matt 26:30-35 & 69-75 (Matt 26:56)
Day 4 (Monday) Black
Darkness – Matt 27:45-54
Day 5 (Tuesday) Red
Pierced for us – Isaiah 53:5 & John 19:31-38
Day 6 (Wednesday) Nails

Day 7 (Thursday) dead branch/wood
The curse – Galatians 3:10-14 (& Gen 3)
Day 8 (Good Friday) 3 crosses

Day 9 (Saturday) Heart
God’s love – John 1:12-13 & John 3:11-21
Day 10 (Easter Sunday) Loud hailer
The Great Commission – Matthew 28:16-20
I hope to post more detail on each day as we go along… So see you back here.
My pre-schoolers & I made these little advent cards last year in preparation for advent. We used clothes pegs to hang them & corresponding gifts, & each day they got to open one.
This year I thought I would do something a little different & easier to take with us when we go away for a bit before Christmas… I stuck each card over a hole in a muffin tin.
